Class of 2007

(excerpt from Principal Kathy Clark’s Commencement address)

Although these 470 graduates sitting here have a more limited perspective because of their age, I can proudly tell you that they have learned much, accomplished a great deal, and given much service to their community in their 17 or 18 years.

I would like to share some interesting facts about Skyline’s class of 2007:

·         44 of them are graduating as Service Scholars after dedicating at least 150 hours of service to our community.  This is the most we have ever had earn this honor.

·         Our American Sign Language senior students earned money for deaf children in Kenya, enough to support five children for a year.

·         7 out of our 12 senior cheerleaders have cheerleading scholarships and will be cheering next year for Utah State, SUU, Weber, the University of Arizona and the University of Michigan.  4 of the other 5 senior cheerleaders earned academic scholarships.

Many seniors have accomplished terrific things.  A few include:

·         Murray Eagle Awards to Best Actress and Actor in a musical to Camille Smith and Dan Lofgren.

·         Andrew Jasumback, who severely broke his leg in the Florida football game his junior year, qualified for the State track meet this spring in long jump, the 4X1 and medley relay

·         Chris Peterson, who is a two-time national age group cyclist.

·         Adam Bockelie, who ski raced competitively throughout high school and missed many days because of racing, but still managed to be admitted to M.I.T.

Academically, this class before us is top notch:

·         51% are graduating with cumulative GPAs of 3.5 or higher.

·         13 were finalists in the National Merit competition.

·         17 of the class are International Baccalaureate diploma candidates, another 21 will receive certificates in IB classes.

·         48.4% of this senior class have passed at least one AP exam.

Sterling Scholars – out of 13 categories, eight of our nominees became finalists.  Out of 53 schools, Skyline had

·         One runner up – Sarah Dupont, Social Science

·         Three winners –

·              Kevin Ni, Mathematics

·              T.J. McLaughlin, Computer Technology

·              Siwei Zhou, Speech & Drama

·         Special award – Jungwang Wang, Philo T. Farnsworth Science Award

·         General Sterling Scholar (highest award given in Sterling Scholar competition ) –  Kevin Ni

Skyline Math Team DOMINATED at the recent Utah State Math Contest.

Kevin Ni was named one of about 100 Presidential Scholars in the nation.  He will meet with President Bush in Washington, D.C. this June.

This year we again administered over 1100 AP and IB tests.  Because of these high test numbers, Skyline was named one of the top 5% of our nation’s public high schools by Newsweek magazine. Our ranking was 396th.

University of Utah – 32% of their freshman scholarships (52 out of 162) went to Skyline students.

At the beginning of fall, a Skyline graduate will be in every prestigious university from Harvard, Cornell, Duke and Dartmouth to Johns Hopkins, University of Pennsylvania, M.I.T. and Stanford.

And they will be attending on scholarships – our seniors were offered $7.5 million in scholarships this year, more than any previous year.
